Lawmakers Stress Ways To Boost Manufacturing In The Chicago Region

Local and federal lawmakers from the Chicago area on Monday discussed how to strengthen the manufacturing industry in the region.

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle was joined by Congressmen Danny Davis and Raja Krishnamoorthi at a discussion hosted by the Chicagoland Manufacturing Renaissance Council, a regional partnership of organizations that promote the industry.

 

The Manufacturing Mismatch

Manufacturing companies need workers. Chicago has plenty. But linking them together may require a regionally coordinated effort.

The men were trainees with West Side Forward, a nonprofit trying to revitalize the West Side of Chicago. The group, based in the city’s Austin neighborhood, buses trainees to Schaumburg at least once a week to receive manufacturing training and instruction.

Terry Iverson, president and CEO of the manufacturing firm his grandfather founded 88 years ago, loses sleep worrying what will come of the business once he decides to retire.

His kids aren’t interested in taking the reins at Iverson & Co. in Des Plaines, which sells and services machine tools. His vice president had been groomed for ownership but left for another opportunity.
